But of course, it doesn’t have completely free reign to do so. Regardless of what a daredevil director might envision as an opportunity to shock, discomfort and elicit a reaction from the audience, that vision is held in check by both the studio that bankrolls the film and typically wants to see a return on their investment and the quality control group that most countries have to ensure each film is deemed suitable for audiences and rated properly before release. While this balanced system serves to make sure that violence, nudity and offensive content aren’t running roughshod through every big screen offering, it has been known to go a little overboard in terms of censorship. The interpretation of various governments over what is considered suitable content for film audiences has not been without controversy. Organizations formed to govern film content across the world have opted to ban certain movies due to overly conservative attitudes towards progressive themes like homosexuality and race relations. There have also been instances of film bans for reasons as wide-ranging as being deemed offensive on religious grounds to showing unrealistic depictions of time travel. Yes, folks in China apparently take time travel very seriously. Even the United States’ Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has a somewhat checkered history of seemingly trivial bans, once refusing “Monty Python’s Life of Brian” for its satire of Christianity and even a Walt Disney nature documentary that showed footage of a buffalo giving birth. Now, that’s not to suggest that all bans are without merit. Sometimes, directors do push too far past the boundaries of good taste and certain pieces of cinema can find themselves reduced to smutty, exploitative filth that is utterly devoid of redeeming value. Even as the perception of what is decent has evolved and modernized from not showing a couple in the same bed to pushing for Disney to feature an LGBT princess in one of their movies, there remain films that operate outside the realm of good taste and probably aren’t suited for a wide cinematic audience. Even the most progressive and liberal-minded of movie-goers would have trouble defending these 10 explicit movies that were deemed worthy of a theatrical ban in some countries. While these films, which range in release date from 1933 to as recently as 2010, are bound by the era from which they came out of , they largely continue to stand out as shocking even to audiences of today. Some of the bans have since been lifted and some of these films have even attained something of a cult status among movie-goers who thrive on envelope-pushing cinema, but there is little wonder as to why these films were initially banned. Scenes of sex and violence in movies can often add a much-needed bit of juice and maverick filmmakers are often heralded as daring and bold in Hollywood, but going too far can have severe repercussions, as these 10 films learned the hard way.
